Our profession has been abuzz the last year or two with regards to the GSEs being mandated to modernize the appraisal profession. Why are appraisers essentially being excluded from the conversation about modernizing the profession?

Appraisal modernization is a hot topic right now, but updating the appraisal process is easier said than done. In markets with higher volume, such as 2020-2021, it can be difficult for appraisers to keep up with demand — which slows loan processing times and drives up costs for borrowers. If we can check those boxes, we succeed.

In response to the GAO report, the OCC said it would update guidance for redlining examinations and develop examiner training. In the seven years leading up to 2018, the OCC performed about 140 exams, on average, per year.
