What else is happening in and around your Seattle?

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 17
On Nov. 10, 1961, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., in his only visit to Seattle, addressed students at Garfield High School, exhorting them to make something of themselves and their lives. It will be at that same Central District school where people will congregate on MLK Jr. Day for a rally and march to city hall. 11:30am (after a virtual job fair and workshops, from 8:30am).

Cirque Under the Tent, Jan. 18-Mar. 13
Cirque du Soleil comes to Marymoor Park in Redmond for a two-month run. The show has been reimagined for a new generation to enjoy. Alegría includes beautiful costumes and colorful sets amid stunning feats of circus artistry. Various times.

Basketball Hijinks, Jan. 27-29
I grew up looking forward to seeing the Harlem Globetrotters show off their basketball prowess each year on ABC’s “Wide World of Sports”. It was amazing to watch the players’ shot-making and silliness wrapped into four quarters of wizardry. The long-running show comes to our area – Kent, Everett, and for the first time at Climate Pledge Arena – and is well worth catching in person. Tickets are available at discount. Various times.

Outdoors Show, Feb. 2-6
The outdoors comes indoors for the Washington Sportsmen’s Show at the Washington State Fair Events Center in Puyallup. It’s the largest show of its kind in our state and includes seminars, exhibitors and food/drink. Various times.

Boat Show, Feb. 4-12
Continuing the outdoors theme, Seattle will host its annual boat show. Thousands of watercraft will be on display at Lumen Field Event Center in Sodo, with a free shuttle service to see boats in the water at Lake Union. Kids 17 and under are free, plus there is 2-for-1 Tuesday (Feb. 8). Various times.

Seattle Ballet, Feb. 4-13
Pacific Northwest Ballet performs Roméo et Juliette by Jean-Christophe Maillot. Watch Shakespeare’s classic story come to life at McCaw Hall in Seattle Center. Various times. Plus, Swan Lake comes to PNB April 15-24.

Chinese New Year, Feb. 5
The Lunar New Year Celebration returns to the International District. Watch lion and dragon dances, drumming and a parade as the Asian community marks the Year of the Tiger. Food vendors will surround Hing Hay Park, 423 Maynard Avenue South. 11am-4pm

Flower and Garden Show, Feb. 9-13
Garden displays, seminars and hundreds of vendors will fill the Washington State Convention Center for the Northwest Flower & Garden Festival. Various times. Plus, a virtual gala and auction will support the Washington Park Arboretum.

Please check with the venue to confirm times and dates of any in-person events.

In case you missed it….

Even I take a break from the real estate world. That’s why you may notice the blog was a bit bare in recent weeks. We only touched on two topics:

  • I shared my thoughts on how my 30 years as a journalist – mostly with Dow Jones & Co. in New York City – provided a firm foundation for my career as a real estate professional. It starts with ethics and honesty.
  • And we capped off December with a glimpse at what we may see in residential real estate this year. I called it “expectations for 2022 in Seattle/King County real estate” – one of the most widely read blog posts every year.

Thanks for reading!
