Governments inaugurate new housing supply in PEI

Federal and provincial governments have announced the launch of newly developed housing projects in Prince Edward Island, both of which benefited from multi-million dollar investments in improving the region’s affordable housing supply.

The first project located at 203 Fitzroy Street in Charlottetown was officially completed on November 10, featuring a four-storey modular building that offers affordable studios and one-bedroom apartments for individuals dealing with mental health and/or addiction issues.

This project received nearly $7.9 million in federal funding through the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI), along with a capital grant of $2 million and annual operating grants totalling $2.8 million over a 20-year period from the provincial government.

The second project was developed on the lands of the Abegweit First Nation, and was funded with $1.35 million through the RHI. This development will be serving the Mi’Kmaq Community.

“Ensuring everyone has access to a safe place to call home is vitally important,” said Lawrence MacAuley, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Member of Parliament for Cardigan. “The government of Canada is investing in affordable housing and helping provide access to safe and affordable homes for Indigenous communities across the Island. This investment is key to improving the health and well-being of Indigenous communities on PEI.”
