Unlicensed mortgage broker defrauded wholesale lenders

A 50-year-old former unlicensed mortgage broker from Long Island, New York, pleaded guilty Wednesday to defrauding clients and wholesale lenders out of $4.7 million in mortgage refinancing proceeds that were supposed to pay off existing client mortgages. Brent Kaufman, of Commack, New York, faces up to 30 years in prison, as well as forfeiture and a fine of up to $1 million.

U.S. House Prices Show Substantial Rise Over Last Year

U.S. house prices rose 17.4% from the second quarter of 2020 to the second quarter of 2021, according to the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) House Price Index (HPI). House prices were up 4.9% compared to the first quarter of 2021. FHFA’s seasonally adjusted monthly index for June was up 1.6% from May. “During the second quarter, house prices peaked in June with an 18.8 percent growth rate compared to a year ago,” observes.

Home Prices Jumped 18.6% Year Over Year in June

U.S. home prices continued to hit new highs in June, rising 1.7% compared with May and soaring 18.6% above June 2020, according to the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller home price index. The index’s 10 city composite, measuring home price growth in the 10 largest metros, saw an annual increase of 18.5%, while the 20-city composite saw an annual increase of 19.1%.

Application Volume Ebbs; Rates Sideways to Higher; NFP vs ADP

Mortgage application volume declined again last week , dragged down by flagging refinance activity. The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) says its Market Composite Index, a measure of that volume, decreased 2.4 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis from one week earlier. On an unadjusted basis, the Index was down by 3 percent. The Refinance Index decreased 4 percent from the previous week and was 2 percent higher than the same week one year ago.
