What else is happening in and around your Seattle?

Culinary Cabaret, through Jan. 9
Tis the season to eat, drink, and be merry in a wintry Wonderland where theatre and cabaret meet. Can Can is the (intimate) Pike Place-area venue. Fun is the mission. Watch and enjoy performers sing, dance and make merry as you take in food, drink and/or spirits. Various times.

Architecture & Urban Design, through April 24
Designers, artists and makers put their works on display at the Bellevue Arts Museum Biennial 2021. The theme focuses on the fields of architecture and urban design, an important subject as we witness the evolution of Bellevue, Seattle and other local cityscapes. Learn more.

Cathedral Christmas, Dec. 17
Nothing can get you in the holiday spirit better than hearing the voices and instruments in musical harmony within a classic cathedral. You have several to choose from in our region, including experiencing a service of readings and carols at St. James Cathedral in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood. Adult and youth choirs join brass and organ players for the traditional service. 7:30pm

Craft and Food Fair, Dec. 17-19
Come one, come all indoors to Hangar 30 in Magnuson Park for the Winter Night Market, featuring family fun – street food, crafts, holiday gift ideas and live music. Ticketed event with proof of vaccination and photo ID. Friday, 6-11pm; Saturday, 12-11pm (21+ only); Sunday, 11am-5pm

Holiday Walk-through Experience, Dec. 17-23 and 26-31

If family fun is what you’re after, then you can’t go wrong with a walk-through visit to the new Holiday Magic at the Washington State Fair in Puyullap. Food and drink will be available. 5-10pm

Fiddler on the Roof, Dec. 25
Looking for something different to do on Christmas Day? How about enjoying free Chinese take-out food and a movie at SIFF Cinema Uptown? After a year off (thanks, pandemic!), the Lower Queen Anne theater comes to life with a showing of Fiddler on the Roof and live Klezmer music. 12pm

New Year’s Eve at the Space Needle, Dec. 31
Will they or won’t they? We are still awaiting a decision on whether revelers will congregate for New Year’s Eve fireworks at the Needle. Last year’s event was cancelled in favor of a digital representation overlaid on TV screens. Stay tuned!

Polar Bear Plunge, Jan. 1
Join the hundreds of crazy people running into Lake Washington to celebrate the new year … or watch the chilly start to 2022 from ashore. Matthews Beach Park is the venue, costumes are customary and it’s free.

Aretha: A Tribute, Jan. 21-23
Seattle Symphony is more than classical music. The Witness Mass Choir and five soloists join conductor Lucas Waldin and the symphony for a retrospective of Aretha Franklin. Three-time Grammy Award nominee Ryan Shaw and Capathia Jenkins – among others – will perform many iconic favorites from the Queen of Soul. Tickets for this Benaroya Hall showcase will likely go fast.

Please check with the venue to confirm times and dates of any in-person events.

In case you missed it….

A majority of my writings for Living the Dream – the blog – focused the past several weeks on smart-home technology. I have covered the topic in depth; in fact, you can get a copy of a booklet on my previously published posts

This time, we touched on three smaller – but just as important – areas of the home: smart bedrooms, smart switches and selecting the right light bulbs. Have a read and let me know if there is a home-tech feature I have left out.

In other blog posts this past month or so, we covered how to prepare your home and family for an earthquake and produced a video tribute to veterans of foreign wars.

To great successes in 2022!
